The Mac will be frustratingly slow. But CDs should mount. A lock up does not sound like a failing unit. More likely sounds like something the OS does not like. My HFS CDs just won't show up on the Finder, the desktop. They're simply ignored. A lock up is something different. Sounds like the OS reads the CD and when it tries to mount it, it hangs. Take fresh oranges extract juice and taste immediately and part of after one hour taste will differ, it might get little bitter or very bitter.
